The founder, Nick Proulx, is a native to New Hampshire. Growing up in the Lakes Region, he was introduced to the art of fly fishing and fly tying at the age of ten. “Two decades later, my obsession for the sport continues on. I have spent countless hours on back country ponds, small streams, and larger rivers trying to study and learn as much as I can about the fish I spend so much time chasing. In 2016 I met my wife Lindsey and had the opportunity to introduce and teach her how to fly fish, it challenged my ability to catch fish without holding a fly rod. My passion for teaching and fishing progressed into obtaining my guides license and created Northern Water Guide Service.”
Nicks previous experience as a firefighter and a NH state fire instructor gives him the ability to offer practical teaching instruction on the water to new and experienced fly fishermen. He holds a state EMT license and is CPR certified.
Not only will you have a fun day on the water, but an educational one. Our package whether a half day or full day will include all flies, leaders, and any gear you may need if you’re just starting out.
“Nick is an excellent guide. Very solid, good person, which is as important a guide criteria as knowing the technical stuff - which he’s also very good at. On our trip Nick gave just the right combination of teaching and just letting me fish. He’s a skilled teacher. Planning to book a tight line trip with him next year. ”

CLIENT FEEDBACK
“Ryleigh approved” at September 2024 Fly Fishing School
“Without a doubt…. One of the best guided experiences I have had in 20years + of fly fishing across the US and Canada.
Obviously it helps when the fish cooperate, but Nick was the perfect balance of helpful and knowledgeable but also knew when to give us space and let us fish and enjoy the day. That is so important! Every cast (no matter how bad) doesn’t need a critique, every fish doesn’t need to be netted by the guide, and sometime it’s fun to struggle through a slow period. ”
“While fishing, I did not remember too often that I was with a guide. Nick treated me like family, not a client. The day felt relaxed and casual, not at all like a business transaction. The attention to start time, location, and water conditions made the day successful. Above all the patience that was displayed with beginner mistakes and the learning curve made the pressure feel almost non-existent. Nick clearly has a passion for fishing and it shows up brightly during the time on the water. I learned not just about fly fishing, but about water conditions, the local area, and the fish themselves. ”
“The instruction Nick provides is thorough and incredibly useful. We all felt confident on the river due to his diligent prep. ”
“Great day as always. It’s a continuum of learning, and gaining experience of being on the water. And very appreciative of Nick’s attention to a safe and productive experience. And willingness to lose a couple of flies (but who’s counting).
Focus was on Euro nymphing, including precision casting, reading the water, wading, and putting the fish in the basket. The morning was great, caught a wild salmon which made a run requiring both Nick and I to chase it downstream (AWESOME!!). ”
“Nick exceeded our expectations. It is very clear he is an expert fly fisherman. He is also a great teacher who explains things very well. We were new to the sport, and he made it very approachable and really fun! ”
